THE WHOLISTIC APPROACH
BY GARY ALAN SPANOVICH
The Wholistic Approach is a new approach to making better plans and better decisions, especially when you are dealing with: changing phenomena that you may never have had to deal with before; competing priorities that make it hard to see a best course of action; or where there are acrimonious groups and conflict. Also where new visions or new approaches to old problems are needed. Thus it is a framework to incorporate complex phenomenon and situations with new organizational process that can speed the process of decision-making as well as reducing group conflict. Likewise it is a new way to approach conflict resolution and mediation.
Gary Alan Spanovich developed the Wholistic Approach™ and has been consulting on it since 1990 in his capacity as a University professor and as a consultant and mediator to corporations, state and local governments, and groups. He is an urban planner with over 40 years of experience in urban, transportation and land use planning in Oregon as well as international work in Asia and Europe. His decades of planning and public works experience prompted him to look for a better way to understand inter-dependencies and make decisions in the public sector due to the their many controversies and complexities. As a result through his University teaching and consulting career he has developed with Nobel Peace Laureates and applied the Wholistic Approach © to finding new and creative solutions to both complex physical world problems as well as community and organizational controversies; and to find solutions for new phenomenon for which there is very little research or background available; and been able to assist organizations with visioning and imaginative solutions.
